On Monday, the Secretary-General opened the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), saying it could equally be called the “Commission on the Status of Power”. “Gender equality is fundamentally a question of power,” he stressed. The Secretary-General underscored his concern about a pushback on women’s rights around the world and pledged: “we will push back against the pushback. And we will keep pushing.” He also reported “good progress” on achieving gender parity in the United Nations, noting “we are well on our way to parity in all senior ranks by 2021 – and across the board in the UN by 2028”.  On Tuesday, the Secretary-General took part in a high-level event on Women in Power and held a townhall with civil society. He also met with UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador, Anne Hathaway. On Twitter, he thanked her for “using her voice to highlight efforts for gender equality and a better world for all”.

Personnel killed in air crash were “mirror of the United Nations,” says Secretary-General

On Friday, the Secretary-General spoke at a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of victims of the air crash in Ethiopia on 10 March.  “We come together in sadness and solidarity to pay tribute to our fellow UN family members who perished on Sunday,” he said. “In doing so, we also remember all the victims of the air crash that claimed so many lives – including civil society partners and humanitarian workers.” The Secretary-General added that the UN personnel who perished were a “mirror of the United Nations … doing their part, in solidarity with all of us, to build a better world, brick by brick, deed by deed, day in and day out.” The Ethiopian Airlines flight which was bound for Nairobi, Kenya, crashed shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday. There were no survivors.

Secretary-General calls on all to heed the call of youth marching for #ClimateAction

On Friday, the Secretary-General wrote that young people had taken to the streets with a clear message to world leaders: “Act now to save our planet and our future from the climate emergency.” In an op-ed published in The Guardian, he said: “These schoolchildren have grasped something that seems to elude many of their elders: we are in a race for our lives, and we are losing. The window of opportunity is closing – we no longer have the luxury of time, and climate delay is almost as dangerous as climate denial.” To those marching, the Secretary-General wrote: “The more I see your commitment and activism, the more confident I am that we will win. Together, with your help and thanks to your efforts, we can and must beat this threat and create a cleaner, safer, greener world for everyone”.
