The Secretary-General visited India this week where he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the strong cooperation between the country and the United Nations. The Secretary-General attended the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention, the first General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance, and an event at which he presented the 2018 “Champions of the Earth” award to Prime Minister Modi. He also laid a wreath in honour of Mahatma Gandhi at the Raj Ghat memorial, addressed a group of young people at the India Habitat Centre and opened the new UN House in the capital, New Delhi. Before returning to New York, the Secretary‑General visited the Golden Temple in the Indian city of Amritsar. In a tweet, he said the Temple was a “place of peace, tolerance and harmony; it is sacred to the Sikh people, and it is open to all people from all religions. It was my great honour to share in the warm and generous spirit of this holy place.”

In defending victims of sexual violence in conflict, Nobel laureates have “defended our shared values”

On Friday, the Secretary-General congratulated Nadia Murad and Dr. Denis Mukwege on being awarded the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. “Ten years ago, the Security Council unanimously condemned sexual violence as a weapon of war. Today the Nobel Committee recognized the efforts of Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege as vital tools for peace,” he said.
