Nov 1, 2021

Throughout the unfolding humanitarian crisis, the UN has been working to provide aid to those in need.

Millions of people are displaced and in urgent need of life-saving assistance in Ethiopia.

The United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Office (OCHA) is working with partners to coordinate the response in the region. Acute food insecurity is affecting millions of people, combined with malnutrition and water shortages.

A full-scale humanitarian crisis has unfolded as the fighting in northern Ethiopia has created a massive wave of forced displacement, with more than 2.1 million people uprooted from their homes, including refugees who had sought sanctuary in Ethiopia

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is working to provide vitally needed emergency shelter, food, potable water and health screening to the thousands of refugee women, children and men arriving from the Tigray region in search of protection.

They are also distributing relief items, including blankets, sleeping mats, plastic sheeting and hygiene kits.

International Organization for Migration (IOM)is providing families in displacement sites with shelter, non-food items and other critical support.

Up to 7 million people in Tigray, Amhara and Afar are now in need of food assistance and other emergency support. This includes more than 5 million people in Tigray, where an estimated 400,000 are living in famine-like conditions.

The World Food Programme is working to reach those most in need with life-saving food assistance.

Women and children have been hit particularly hard, with many children facing life-threatening hunger. Internally displaced people sites hosting children are overcrowded and unsanitary and are a breeding ground for disease outbreaks, including cholera

.The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF)is supporting families with urgent water, health and nutrition services.

UNFPA is helping build capacity to respond to the needs of women and girls; from delivering emergency reproductive health kits to addressing issues including safe birth and training of health professionals in the clinical management of rape and sexual exploitation.

The funding gap to assist people has created tremendous obstacles to the response. Up to $1 billion more is needed to respond to the humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable.
