Check out our recap of Monday’s events and then read on to find out what’s next for “UN Week.”
On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly General Debate begins and over 130 world leaders will be gathering at the UN Headquarters to discuss the theme for this year: The Post-2015 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage. The online General Debate Resource Centre provides access to the list of speakers, text of the speeches as well as live video and more. The Twitter hashtag is #UNGA. Find out more from the UN News Centre.
After 20 years of work, the Commission on Sustainable Development held its final session last week, making way for the first-ever meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (watch live) that kicks off on Tuesday at 3 pm. Find out what the new Forum is all about in the above video. Follow @UN, @sustdev, @UN_DSD and #SustDev for updates.
Tuesday is also the opening day of the annual Treaty Event. Each September, states are asked to commit to new treaty actions whereby they sign or ratify one of the numerous treaties that make up international law. The UN acts as the depository of these treaties. This year, there is a special call for Member States that have not done so to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Child and its three Optional Protocols, stressing that this is vital to protect children from abuse and mistreatment worldwide.
You can also watch press conferences, stakeouts and more live online.
In addition, there are many other side events scheduled. Check out the Daily Journal (PDF) for updates and location information.
