Highlights of planned activities in Rio on Wednesday:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will open the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development at 10 a.m. The first statement will be delivered by Brittany Trilford, 17-year-old winner of the “Date with History” competition.  World leaders and representatives of countries will begin to make their remarks during the morning session.

Updated: The morning session will include a statement by Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, who will also make remarks at the ceremonial session in the afternoon.

At 2 p.m. members of the Secretary-General’s MDG Advocacy Group — eminent personalities who have shown outstanding leadership in promoting the implementation of the MDGs – will speak to the media.

In the evening, the UN Development Programme will honour the 2012 Equator Prize winners.
